Choosing Props for Your Photography Session

Clients often ask me if they should bring any props to their portrait shoot.

For newborn and toddler shoots, we have a small collection of age-appropriate props in the studio, and we will be creating a gallery of these on the website so you can select them before your session. It's worth considering bringing a beloved toy or teddy bear to help your children feel more comfortable in the potentially unfamiliar environment of the photo studio.

Including props in your portrait session can add depth, personality, and interest regardless of age. They can tell a story, create a mood, or make your photos more visually appealing. When selecting props for your session, it's essential to keep a few things in mind:

  • Consider the theme or style of your session. What are you trying to achieve with your photos? Use props like old books, cameras, or typewriters if you're going for a vintage look. Use props like tech gadgets, fashion accessories, or food for a more modern feel.

  • Think about the location of your session. When shooting outside, it's essential to pick props that suit the surroundings. For instance, consider using props like flowers, picnic baskets, or blankets if you're in a park. On the other hand, furniture, books, and artwork are great options for shooting indoors.

  • Choose props that are meaningful to you. This will help to make your photos more personal and memorable. If you have a favourite book, bring it along to your session. If you're a musician, bring your guitar.

  • Please don't overdo it. Having too many props in a photo can be overwhelming and distracting. Choosing key props to enhance the photo without detaining from the portrait is best.

Here are some approaches to picking suitable props:

  • Start by brainstorming a list of props that would work well for your session. Once you have a list, narrow it down to a few key props you love.

  • Check out charity shops, car boot sales, and online marketplaces for affordable props. You don't have to spend much money to find great props.

  • Get creative with your props. Be bold, think outside the box, and use everyday objects creatively.

  • Have fun with it! When preparing for a photo shoot, selecting props that you genuinely enjoy will help you feel at ease when posing for pictures

Here is a list of prop ideas that you could use for your portrait session:

  • Books

  • Flowers

  • Food

  • Music instruments

  • Clothes

  • Accessories

  • Objects from nature

Regarding most portrait sessions, having props can enhance your photos by adding interest, depth, and personality. Therefore, enjoy it and select props that resonate with you!
