STUDIO JOURNAL & ESSAYS
Reflections on craft, rhythm, and the tools that shape our creative life.
From my studio in Barnsley, this month's Newsletter and blog review explores the balance between modern technology and personal pace. I look at how AI fits into our day-to-day workflows, how to align creativity with real energy, and why traditional photography practices keep evolving.
OCTOBER FEATURE / ESSAY 01
AI as the person sitting beside me
Why I’m finding AI most useful when it works with me, not instead of me. Over the last few weeks, I’ve had ChatGPT open on one screen while I work on another—discovering that companionship and testing ideas in real-time creates a far more collaborative creative partner than simple automation.
ESSAY 02 / PERSONAL PACE
Learning to live at the speed of my energy
Retirement gave me control of my time, but I am gradually discovering that I also need to respect how much genuine energy I have. Structuring creative work around personal capacity transforms both output and peace of mind.
ESSAY 03 / CREATIVE TIMING
Creativity doesn’t always arrive on schedule
Why I’m trying to separate the moment an idea appears from the moment I actually make the photograph. Having time to shoot doesn't guarantee inspiration—learning to capture ideas when they strike changes everything.
ESSAY 04 / SELF AWARENESS
Learning to work with the way I am
Recognising long-standing patterns and learning to organise daily creative routines around the person you actually are, rather than an artificial ideal.
ESSAY 05 / DIGITAL WORKFLOW
Lightroom Classic or Lightroom?
Lightroom Classic and Lightroom increasingly look less like competing products and more like two harmonious parts of a unified photographic workflow.
FROM THE STUDIO
Thank you for being part of my community.
Whether you are behind the camera, exploring new technology, or simply enjoying the visual stories I share, I always welcome your thoughts and reflections. Over the next Month or two, I need to step away from the keyboard for a while and catch up with some other important jobs. However, I hope to write at least one blog every few weeks. The next round-out newsletter will likely be something in mid-to-late November, therefore.
